Professional Dry Ice Storage Methods

Dry ice naturally sublimates continuously at room temperature, with a daily loss rate of approximately 10%–30%. Proper storage not only extends its usable life but also ensures safe handling:

Use a Dedicated Insulated Container

Store dry ice in a thick-walled Styrofoam box or professional insulated container. Fill empty spaces as much as possible—dry newspaper may be used as filler—to reduce air circulation and effectively slow sublimation.

Never Store It in a Household Refrigerator

A household freezer operates at approximately -18°C, which is far warmer than dry ice at -78.5°C. Placing dry ice in a refrigerator cannot stop sublimation and may damage the thermostat due to the extremely low temperature.

Never Place It in an Airtight Container

When dry ice sublimates into gas, its volume expands approximately 800 times. Never seal dry ice inside a thermos, airtight plastic container, or glass bottle, as excessive internal pressure may cause an explosion.

Keep the Area Well Ventilated

Areas where dry ice is stored or handled, including vehicles and indoor spaces, must be kept well ventilated to prevent elevated carbon dioxide concentrations from causing oxygen deficiency or suffocation.
